Minutes for May 11, 2017

 

Meeting came to order at 6:40 pm.

No minutes from the previous meeting available.

No treasurer’s report.

Business:

Discussion of possible anthology project for next fall.

Hugh talked about what is required of a committee and volunteered to participate in the committee that is being formed.

General agreement was given that any decision on a project should wait until a full board of directors is finalized.

Barbara talked about how books were sold in the past and the advantages of collecting money in advance of a book run.

Stephanie spoke of the advantages of “print on demand” service like Create Space and Ingram Sparks.

Terry shared that his last order of books from Ingram Sparks with printing and shipping cost $6.40 CDN.

Summer Social will be a potluck at the home of Elma Schemenauer, Saturday, July 22nd, 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Attendees should bring a dish sufficient for themselves and any guests they bring. Elma and Hugh will prepare a chili and other hot dish. This year’s Schemenauer Awards will be given at the social. (Note that the deadline for entries has passed.)

Okanagan Valley Writers Festival. Elma gave a report applauding the organization and value of the festival. Elma also shared information on “Red Tuque Books,” a distributor of Canadian indie authors.

Ditty-Master Dennis entertained with a piece celebrating the first published book and, of course, Mother’s Day.

After the break, Eileen and Barbara gave a mini-workshop on poetry, focusing on poetic devices, the difference between poetry and prose, availability of poetic inspiration everywhere, and cautions about editors and poetry. Members then took twenty minutes to write and share brief poems.

Meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm.
